Letting my Soprano loose!

Guess what I did last night? I participated in my first choir practice (as an adult)! I was really nervous before going. You know me.. anxious me. Exactly where is the practice location? Is there parking? What should I wear? Will I start coughing? What if I suck? etc. My friend Laura, the one who made aware of the existence of such a choir in Moncton, let me tag along with her so that it wouldn't be as intimidating as going alone.

They We practice in a church, but we're not singing churchy music per se. On the program : Gershwin / American Folk, Excepts from the musical "Radio Girls". The very first song we practiced was the only one I knew, which is also one of my favourite songs : Summertime. The other songs... let's just say that I'm very thankful that they gave us a practice CD, and that I'll have to learn to read music hehe. I learned the basics in elementary school, but that was so long ago. For now I plan to learn the songs with the CD and then try to understand the music more during practices. We will have 2 concerts this year, which I'm so excited about!

I love love loved it! I couldn't stop smiling! The choir director is SO enhtusiastic and lovely, I already love her. We are a huge choir, I'd say at least 60 members. It's SO awesome when it all comes together - the sopranos, altos, tenors, and bass.

I brought my practice CD and sheet music home, and oh yeah... I didn't blog about this yet, but my parents are in town and stayed over last night. They're buying a new pick up truck. Anyway, they were all curious to hear the music. When mom heard how high and loud I'm practicing, she asked Steph if she should get him some ear plugs :P When I sing at home, pop music or whatever, I don't sing soprano. But I want to sing soprano in the choir. Sopranos have all the fun, I think hehe.

I got rhythm
I got music
I got my man
Who could ask for anything more ?

  2. I was in choir all 4 years of high school and 2 years in community college. The only reason I didn't keep it up for the rest of college is that I would have had to ~gasp~ audition. LOL I did sing in the church choir at Christmas...until I quit church. The choir you described sounds like so much fun! Where will you be performing when it all comes together?

I agree with Emily and Melissa that altos definitely have the most fun and that you should sing in whatever range you are suited to. There actually were some women in my choir that sometimes sang soprano and sometimes sang alto.

  3. "Exactly where is the practice location? Is there parking? What should I wear? Will I start coughing? What if I suck?" OMG, you sound just like me before starting something new...I swear I go through this same inner dialogue!
I was in women's chorus (aka "glee club") all four years of HS and I *still* miss it! I'll have to look around town and see if there's a choir that'll be a good fit for me. I'm an alto, btw, and we have lots of fun too! I still remember the harmonies of the songs we sang and will still sing them (mostly Christmas songs)...I think it sounds so cool!

  4. As a seasoned choral singer of 20 years, I will tell you for certain that altos have all the fun. Sopranos sing melody 90% of the time - that's the easy stuff! Altos get the harmony, which is what makes music interesting and beautiful. Realistically though, you should sing the part that is right for your range. Ask the choral director to let you sing for her and help you to figure out the best part for you!

  5. I was thinking of you last night Emily! hehe. What I like about the sopranos is the challenging high notes (So far on the CD I've heard about 2 which I think are beautifully high, I can't wait to hear us do that as a group!!) BUT I'm not ruling out switching later, if I find that I'd be a better fit as an alto... It's too bad that I can't switch depending on the song LOL

  • How exciting!!!!

I love to sing, but just haven't made the time to find a choir. My church has a choir but I prefer sitting with my family during the service.

I've always been a soprano and love it.

    Good luck!!
